A historic market cross has been destroyed after a Gold Range Rover ploughed through the beloved Yorkshire monument this morning.
Residents of Howden, East Yorkshire, were left aghast after the 4x4 rammed into the 16ft-local landmark at around 10.30am outside the Shire Hall.
Emergency services swarmed the scene after they were called to the market town centre amid shocked shoppers and businesses.
One pedestrian was said to have been taken to hospital. However, police since confirmed no one had any serious injuries.
Local councillor David Howard said he rushed to the scene to check if the area had been damaged.
He said: "(The cross) is in a real mess. We’re trying to work out who owns it, really.
"It marks the centre of the town and it needs to be put back in some form – restored, repaired, replaced.
"That’s for the future. At the minute, we just need it to be safe and conserve as much as possible."

Commenting on its appearance, Mr Howard added: "It does look like a very, very interesting art installation at the motor show at the moment.
"In fact, it’s almost an album cover from an early 1980s rock band."
Brodie Tomlinson, who rushed to assist those at the scene, told the BBC they heard "quite a loud bang and a scream".
"We just ran out to help, as you do what you can I suppose, without intervening too much," she told the broadcaster.

"Luckily there was an off-duty fireman that seemed to take control and had us holding doors open."

Located in the heart of the Market Place, the cross has stirred up some confusion over its history.

"Thankfully, nobody is believed to have sustained serious injuries as a result of the collision.
"The vehicle has since been recovered and the road closure that was put in place whilst emergency services attended has now reopened."
