Cristiano Ronaldo BANNED from Portugal squad and fined just 38 seconds' wages over walkout

Cristiano Ronaldo has received a 30-day ban and been ordered to pay €255 (£215) by the Portuguese Football Federation following his departure from the national squad during September's international break.

The sanctions were imposed after the 41-year-old left the team camp midway through fixtures following a dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus.

The financial penalty amounts to an insignificant sum for the Al-Nassr forward, who earns £488,000 daily in Saudi Arabia. The £215 fine represents just 38 seconds of his wages.

Crucially, the suspension has been backdated to September 30, meaning the Portugal captain will be eligible for selection when his country faces Denmark and Wales in November's Nations League fixtures.

The incident occurred at Portugal's Copenhagen training base ahead of a Nations League match against Denmark.

Ronaldo departed last month following a 2-1 win over Norway in which Jesus kept him on the bench throughout despite asking him to prepare to enter the game.

The veteran forward subsequently published a 1,740-word statement in October explaining his actions.

He claimed Jesus had reneged on assurances about playing time and failed to honour an agreement to present a mutually agreed account at a press conference two days after the match. Jesus rejected these allegations.

In his detailed letter, Ronaldo acknowledged his error and expressed regret to his teammates for missing the final two fixtures of the international window.

He also confirmed he had no intention of retiring from international duty and requested the Portuguese federation not show him preferential treatment.

The disciplinary council of the Portuguese Football Federation announced on Monday it had found the charges "fully substantiated", convicting Ronaldo under Article 160(1) of the federation's disciplinary regulations.

The verdict, which runs to 28 pages, concluded Ronaldo "unjustifiably abandoned" the national team.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

The relatively lenient fine was determined after considering mitigating circumstances. The council noted Ronaldo's "contributions to soccer and his recognition for athletic merit" as factors working in his favour.

Ronaldo submitted his CV to the proceedings, documenting the honours and distinctions accumulated throughout his career.

The statement explained: "With regard to the mitigating circumstances of having rendered significant services to soccer and having received praise for sporting merit, the defendant Cristiano Ronaldo submitted his sports resume, including the awards and recognitions he has received throughout his career."

With the ban backdated to the date of the offence, Ronaldo has only 11 days remaining to serve.

This timing ensures he will be available when Portugal face Denmark on November 14, with a fixture against Wales following three days later.

Jesus has indicated he anticipates the captain being available for selection, whilst Ronaldo has insisted upon his desire to continue representing his country.

The likelihood at present is the five-time Ballon d'Or winner will feature in the squad for both Nations League encounters.

However, whether the relationship between player and manager has been fully repaired remains uncertain.

The pair previously worked together at Al-Nassr, where they won the Saudi Pro League title in 2025-26.

However, their recent falling-out has raised doubts about their future working dynamic with Portugal.
