Brentford are collaborating with authorities to track down individuals responsible for an incident during Saturday's Premier League fixture against Liverpool.
The investigation centres on a rugby ball that was launched from a rooftop in the vicinity of the Gtech Community Stadium towards the playing area.
The club has passed the matter to the Metropolitan Police and is assisting their inquiry to establish the identities of those involved.
In a formal statement, the club described the incident as involving an object propelled from height towards the pitch.
"Such behaviour is dangerous and potentially very harmful," the statement warned.
The side indicated appropriate measures could follow the probe.
"The matter has been referred to the police and the club is supporting the relevant authorities in their investigation to help identify those responsible and take appropriate action, which may result in criminal prosecution," the statement continued.
Brentford emphasised safeguarding everyone present on matchdays remains paramount.
A spokesman said: "The matchday safety of fans, staff, players and officials is of utmost importance, and the club will support all efforts to ensure action is taken."
Footage circulating widely on social media captured an individual kicking the rugby ball from a rooftop near the ground, with the object appearing to strike the stadium roof before landing.

Additional footage showed venue personnel retrieving the ball from the playing surface.
Saturday's match ended in disappointment for Brentford, who surrendered an early advantage to lose 2-1.
The hosts were reduced to nine players before the final whistle.
The ground's location amid both residential and commercial properties creates particular security challenges for the club.
