'Migrants are bringing war to Ireland!' Irish Freedom Party president reacts to critical incident figures

Irish Freedom Party president Hermann Kelly has claimed migrants are "bringing war" to Ireland, suggesting official figures on critical incidents in asylum accommodation significantly understate the problem.

Official figures from the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth show that 55 critical incidents occurred in International Protection Accommodation Service (IPAS) centres in 2024.

Just under half of these incidents (25) were related to mental health or self-harm.

Speaking to GB News, Hermann Kelly, said: "It is very bad. Look, even according to their own statistics, there were seven deaths in Ireland among asylum seekers last year.

"And these are passengers. The figure that the department gave out was that there were 55 critical incidents.

"There were way more than that because a researcher on Twitter [X] today posted figures.

"Now, given that there are 33,000 self-proclaimed asylum seekers in Ireland and over 300 accommodation centres, he asked for the figures for just four months from three centres.

"How many critical incidents were there? 22, which included threats to murder, threats to kill other residents, threats to kill security, arson, etc.

"People have also seen on video in these centres groups of different nationalities, for example, Algerians having huge gang fights with Georgians.

"The problem is that these economic migrants aren’t just fleeing war; many of them are bringing war to Ireland, and it’s very dangerous for themselves and for the Irish people."

The figures come as the number of people accommodated by IPAS continues to increase to unprecedented levels.

There are now more than 33,000 people being housed in over 320 IPAS centres across Ireland.

This includes 9,000 children who are with their families.

A Department spokesperson emphasised that "the safety and wellbeing of all residents and staff in our accommodation centres is our priority".

"While critical incidents causing death or serious injury within centres are very rare, we work to ensure that residents involved can be supported," the spokesperson said.

They added that staff are trained to respond appropriately and seek support from officials and other agencies as needed.

The current situation reflects record levels of asylum seekers in Ireland's accommodation system, with the Department confirming more than 33,000 people are now housed in over 320 centres nationwide.

This includes 9,000 children staying with their families. The rising numbers have coincided with the highest annual death toll recorded in IPAS accommodation.
