A night of "absolute chaos" saw "10 cars torched" and families evacuated from their homes in a seaside town.
Multiple cars were set alight in Hartlepool, Teeside as neighbours raised the alarm by banging on windows.
Cleveland Police said officers attended "multiple vehicle fires" across the town at around 2.20am on Friday.
The incident saw a "small number" of families evacuated.
A resident in the area said: "Ten cars torched on our street and neighbouring streets, absloute chaos.
"Had to bang the owner awake."
A Cleveland Police spokesman added: "Emergency services are currently dealing with multiple vehicle fires across the Hartlepool area.
Police received report of fires on Caledonian Road, Baden Street, Shrewsbury Street, Lansdowne Road, Osborne Road, and Brinkburn Road.
"A small number of residents have been evacuated and officers are urging people to avoid the area whilst emergency services deal with the incident."
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Cleveland Police online or by calling 101 quoting incident 164288.
It follows another fire in Hartlepool earlier on Thursday, August 17.
Multiple fire engines reportedly tackled the blaze on Windermere Road, which could be seen from miles around.
A huge fire also sparked up at an Essex scrapyard and destroyed 200 vehicles and saw dozens of firefighters tackling the blaze.
Emergency services were called to the car auctioneers in Rochford where 2,000 cars are kept.
More than 50 firefighters from 12 different stations attended the scene and managed to control the fire by 11.20pm.
A spokesman for the scrapyard said the cause of the fire would be investigated "once safe to do so."
