SNP MP Angus MacNeil calls chief whip Brendan OHara a small wee man in extraordinary public Commons bust up

The House of Commons played host to a Nat-on-Nat slugging match on Monday night, as SNP heavyweights Angus MacNeil and Brendan O’Hara faced off in the corridors of Parliament.

Punching up, the Western Isles representative, Angus MacNeil, launched a very public verbal attack on his own chief whip, Brendan O’Hara, before throwing a clutch of paperwork in his direction.

An enraged MacNeil, 52, spouted a torrent of abuse at O’Hara, 60, slurring the chief whip as “a small wee man!” according to the Guido Fawkes website.

After shouting the phrase several times, MacNeil allegedly hurled a jumble of letters in the direction of his senior colleague.

The papers are believed to have been disciplinary notices sent by O’Hara over MacNeil’s patchy attendance record in parliament.

After the row, MacNeil took his thoughts and feelings to Twitter.

Getting ahead of the narrative, he tweeted: "Always stand up to bullies, – esp any abusing their positions – particularly those who scurry around shouting to anyone listening, 'I'll get him, I'll get him, I WILL get him! – mark my words.'

"These are people, who from school, we should get taught to face down."

He also retweeted comments from a follower, who said: "Yes. They are cowards.

"They can never operate without a similar wee clique of nasty cowards around them. They're also never intelligent people, or they wouldn't behave that way to cover it."

It is believed that the phrase ‘I’ll get him’ is in reference to a previous incident where O’Hara made his thoughts clear that MacNeil should be in the chamber for a debate when he was campaigning to become chairman of the energy security and net zero select committee.

O’Hara, who represents Argyll and Bute, is alleged to have sworn at MacNeil, adding to the notion that O’Hara attempted to rule the Nat roost with an iron fist.

On O’Hara, sources have previously told The Times: “He thinks he's a prison officer but he's drunk on what he perceives as his own power.

"Brendan is a clown who should take up knitting or something useful."

Perhaps also in the market for a vocation change, MacNeil has represented the Western Isles since 2005 but looks to be facing his toughest electoral test against Scottish Labour’s Tourcuil Crichton.

Far from seeking out O’Hara for a loud word in public, MacNeil’s voting record would appear that he were looking for a little more independence from his chief whip.

MacNeil’s supporters have cited the arduous and unpredictable commute from his home on the Isle of Barra to London, and MacNeil’s duties as a single father, as reasoning for the MP’s patchy voting record.

The Western Isles is seen as a close ally of Alex Salmond, the former SNP first minister, but has ruled out breaking away from the SNP to join Salmond in his quest at the Alba Party.
